Frequently Asked Question(s):

What are the stages of bioprocess?

Bioprocess can be divided into two main stages: upstream and downstream stage. Upstream process aims at obtaining optimal yield and productivity of the product obtained via microbial or cell culture. Upstream process begins with the preparation of media and inoculum, inoculation, process control in bioreactor and harvesting.

After harvesting, comes the downstream process which aims at maximizing product recovery from the culture broth. Depending on the chemical properties of the product and the contaminants in the culture broth, downstream process consists of series of unit operations such as tangential flow filtration, nano filtration, electrodialysis, ion-exchange chromatography, crystallization, precipitation etc.

As a thumb rule, in Bioprocess, downstream stage accounts for 85% of the production costs, therefore it becomes essential to design upstream process considering not only optimal product yields but should also aim at reducing contaminants to reduce downstream processing costs.
